Also called an anti-roll bar, anti-sway bar, a stabilizer bar, or just plain roll bar, it's one of the many critical parts of the suspension system in a vehicle.

What Does One Do?

It increases the suspension's roll stiffness. This, in turn, helps keep body roll -- that unnervingly "lean" that you feel when cornering fast or driving across uneven terrain -- to a minimum. It does this by connecting opposite (i.e., left-side and right-side) wheels with short lever arms, linked together by a torsion spring.

Some sway bars optimize rigidity to give your ride a flatter, more stable stance when cornering, while others can even reduce understeer.
