No matter whether you drive a car, SUV, pickup, or van, your engine needs a mixture of fuel and air in order to create power. That's why your vehicle came with an original, factory-installed air intake system. Also known as an air induction system, it's responsible for delivering air to the engine's combustion chamber.
How Air Intake Systems Work
First, external air passes through the engine air filter, which traps airborne contaminants and debris and prevents them from getting into the engine. Three parts of the air intake system then regulate how much air is used by the engine. The throttle body hosts a mass airflow sensor, which is one method. Second, an air metering system provides feedback on how much air is used to the engine control unit (ECU). Lastly, oxygen sensors calculate ideal exhaust air levels, which helps the engine adjust fuel use as needed.
How to Spot Air Intake System Problems
Unfortunately, even the best air intake system can go bad over time. When that happens, your engine doesn't get the air it needs to run right. Signs of failure include:
- The "Check Engine" light comes on
- Your engine idles faster or slower than usual
- The engine revs higher than normal
- Worsening engine performance
