Cooling Systems
The factory cooling system in your vehicle is an essential part of maintaining an ideal engine temperature. While most people understand that it helps keep the engine cooled during operation, it's also key to keeping the coolant liquid and flowing when outside temperatures drop below freezing. If the engine temperature gets too low, your fuel economy will worsen and emissions will rise. If it gets too high, the engine will suffer significant damage. Older vehicles may employ air cooling, but most modern cars and SUVs use liquid cooled systems. This system is made up of several components. Passages inside the engine block and heads allow coolant to flow through. A water pump circulates the coolant. The thermostat measures the temperature of the coolant and permits or restricts its flow as needed. The radiator cools the hot coolant mix before it returns to the engine. A radiator cap controls the system pressure. Hoses connect the pieces and transfer the coolant between the engine and the radiator.
With this many working parts, it makes sense that even the high-quality original cooling system parts found in your vehicle can fail due to wear and tear. The most obvious clue is when steam begins billowing out from under your hood. An overheating vehicle is another clear indicator. If you check the coolant and see that it's low, or looks dirty, there's likely an issue that needs resolving. Your best bet is to have your cooling system inspected by a professional.
