ABS System Parts
Your anti-lock braking system (ABS) prevents your wheels from locking up when you brake. This helps the tires maintain contact with the road surface, giving you more control over your vehicle. Sensors on each wheel detect when a wheel stops moving and starts to skid. The system reacts by releasing and then reapplying (or "pumping") the brakes rapidly to stop the skidding and maintain command. There are four major components of the typical anti-lock braking system. The speed sensors monitor how quickly the wheels are rotating. Valves in the brake line allow, block, or release brake pressure. The pump delivers that pressure to the calipers in the form of a hydraulic fluid. The electronic control unit (ECU) acts as the brains of the system. It interprets data from the sensors to determine when to pump the brakes or not.
Even an original ABS installed at the factory can go bad over time. If the ABS warning light stays on when you start your vehicle, you need to be aware that your anti-lock brake feature may not be working. Your regular brakes should still work fine, but you'll need to modify your driving habits until you get the problem looked at. Possible reasons for the light to come on include a blown fuse, a sensor that's either damaged or covered in muck, a broken wire, or an ECU that's stopped working. Have your ABS checked by a professional to determine exactly what's wrong. When you need to replace a system component, look for the sure thing. That's a genuine Mopar® replacement. You know they fit and work right, since they're the parts made for your model's system. Order from our online auto parts department and enjoy convenient home delivery.
