What are Coil Springs?

They're part of your vehicle's suspension, taking their place alongside bushings, sway bar links, and shock absorbers and strut assemblies (i.e., shocks and struts). For this reason, they're also called suspension springs.

What they do is support the weight of the vehicle, help keep it off the ground, help maintain its proper alignment angles, and compress to absorb the impacts of wheels and tires crossing uneven terrain (like bumps and potholes). The result is not only more reliable handling but also a smoother ride.

Unfortunately, any coil spring can wear out over time, and when that happens, other problems almost certainly follow. Luckily, there are symptoms to tell you that's going on, and they're relatively easy to spot.

Signs of a Failing or Bad Coil Spring

Look for the following:

  • Vehicular sagging and swaying
  • Unusually worn tires
  • Strange noises coming from the underbody
  • Abnormal bounce

See any, and you should inspect your vehicle's suspension system, checking its springs to see if they've worn out. The best way to do that: lift the vehicle up on a hoist. As for when you should replace coil springs otherwise, however, there's no specific timeframe. You can obviously change one, though, if it becomes too weak or rusts or cracks from prolonged moisture or road salt exposure. Either way, when replacement becomes necessary, choose genuine parts.

Why Buy Genuine Mopar vs. Aftermarket Coil Springs?

The brand you love designs them compatible with the make and model you drive, right from the get-go. That guarantee, the suspension parts aftermarket can't always give you.
