Your vehicle's factory headlights have uses galore. You likely already know what a low-beam does. That function's made for lighting the way during everyday driving. A high-beam, though, is designed to shine wider, illuminating the road and your surroundings both when it's very dark and there's no oncoming traffic.

You may also be familiar with hazard light or flasher functions, too. These can signal other drivers that you're in distress or inform them of problems or a dangerous situation nearby. Some brands' higher trim levels even have fog lights to accompany them -- low-glare headlights that brighten the driving environment much better during inclement weather.

Whatever headlights your make and model has, they come from your automaker one of three bulb types. Halogen bulbs are commonest in smaller cars. Xenon bulbs (also called high-intensity discharge or HID bulbs) are commonest in sports cars and performance vehicles, as they have narrower headlamp housings. LED bulbs are low-heat and energy-efficient, and you can find them in many newer models these days.

So, what headlights does your car or truck need, specifically? The answer is body style-specific. When to replace a car light bulb, however, isn't. You should change a Xenon headlamp about every three years (as it gets weaker). Change an LED headlamp, however, if its electronics quit working, or if it burns out. Change a halogen headlamp, though, every couple of years or so.

The best you can buy for the job are genuine. Your OEM designs them specifically for the model you drive, after all. Just be sure to get the right light assembly kit to go with them.
