Originally, bumpers were simple rigid metal bars. Today, it's more common for the bumper structure to have a plastic cover over a reinforcement bar. That bar can be made of aluminum, steel, plastic, or a fiberglass composite. The cover is typically made of a combination of polycarbonate (PC) and acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS).
