The original bumpers on your vehicle are essential parts if you're involved in an accident. Since they absorb the impact energy, they limit the effects a minor collision has on you and your passengers. They also help protect pedestrians from severe injuries.
Originally, bumpers were simple rigid metal bars. Today, it's more common for the bumper structure to have a plastic cover over a reinforcement bar. That bar can be made of aluminum, steel, plastic, or a fiberglass composite. The cover is typically made of a combination of polycarbonate (PC) and acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS). Some find that a smaller bumper can lead to better fuel economy, while others who enjoy off-roading prefer the enhanced protection offered a steel bumper with a longer overhang.
Every type of bumper winds up taking some damage. While minor scratches and dings may not be attractive to look at, you're still safe to drive so long as your bumper is still securely attached.
