Windshield wiper blades are a vehicle's first line of defense against view-obstructing buildup on its windshield. There are three kinds -- conventional, beam, and hybrid. Each attaches to wiper arms in one of three ways -- by hook, clamp, or pin connectors.

Conventional wiper blades are the everyday variety, those made of rubber or silicone, attached to metal frames. They're designed for relatively mild weather conditions in temperate climates, and you replace them at six-month intervals.

Beam wiper blades, however, are longer-lasting than the conventional kind. They're made of solid rubber and designed to conform closely to a windshield's contours. Hybrid wiper blades work much the same as beam blades do, but they have rubber-coated metal frames that make them not only more versatile but also rugged enough to stand up to rougher weather.

Unfortunately, no wiper blade, up front or in the rear, lasts forever; you'll have to change them all eventually. Luckily, the signs it's time to replace them are fairly obvious. They include cracking rubber, deteriorating frames, and failing blade adhesive, along with streaking during use and squeaking and/or chattering noises. When you need to order new ones, choose the genuine OEM article. Your brand designs its wiper blades compatible with its models, after all. You can buy them here at our auto parts store.
