The factory water pump in your vehicle is essential to your engine's successful operation. The water pump circulates coolant through the engine block, cylinder head, hoses, and radiator, helping to keep things at an ideal temperature. While fairly simple, the process is a marvel of engineering. The water pump is a centrifugal pump that's driven by a belt that's connected to the engine crankshaft. When the engine is running, the pump circulates fluid. There is an inlet on the pump that allows the fluid returning from the radiator to hit the pump's vanes. As the pump spins, the fluid is drawn from the center to the outside where it can enter the engine. It makes its way through the engine block to the cylinder head, gets rerouted to the radiator, and then flows back to the water pump for another cycle.

A water pump, no matter how high quality, can still go bad. If you hear a grinding or rumbling noise, that may be due to worn bearings. If coolant is leaking, the shaft seal or gasket may have failed. A new gasket can be fitted into place, but a bad shaft seal requires replacing the entire water pump. Other potential issues include broken plastic impeller blades or a worn timing belt. Don't let a bad water pump lead to significant engine damage. Order yours from our online auto parts department.
