Shocks and Struts 101: Everything You Need to Know

What They are

They're critical parts of vehicle suspension systems. Shocks, also called shock absorbers, are mounted vertically behind the tires and contain hydraulics that minimize spring movement. Struts, also known as strut assemblies, are mounted horizontally and look like extensions of wheels; they often contain both springs and shocks, and they're designed to bear weight. (Note that some vehicles can have struts on one axle and shocks on the other, but that not all vehicles have struts.)

What They Do

They help a vehicle stabilize. They do this by controlling the activity of the suspension's coil springs, and this, in turn, does many things. For one, it helps keep wheels aligned. Secondly, it minimizes body roll. Third, it helps tires remain on the road. Fourth and finally, it helps maintain consistent braking and overall handling. In sum, it keeps the drive well-controlled, and thus, enjoyable.

The Symptoms of When They Go Bad

They include:

  • Generally rough ride quality
  • Abnormal forward lean during a stop
  • Bouncing and/or pulling sideways when turning
  • Worsening response from the steering system
  • Loss of control at higher speeds
  • Uneven or flat areas on the tires
  • An oily or greasy film on suspension parts

Luckily, these signs most often appear before the situation gets worse. See any of them, and you should do a thorough suspension inspection and replace whatever parts the results require. Otherwise, be sure to check on the system every 50,000 miles or so, as per most owner's manuals. Double-check yours for more information. When it's time to order parts, make sure to get genuine ones.

Why You Should Buy Genuine OEM

What Mopar manufactures will fit your brand and model best. That kind of assurance, you may not get from aftermarket shocks and struts.
