Factory brake calipers are arguably one of the most important parts of your braking system. However, not many people understand why they're so essential. Put simply, the caliper clamps down on the wheel's rotor to stop the wheel from rotating. Every time you press the brake pedal, it sends brake fluid from the master cylinder through a series of tubes, hoses, and valves. That brake fluid creates pressure on the pistons inside the caliper, which forces brake pads against the brake rotor. Your vehicle slows as a result of the resistance this creates. Eventually your vehicle stops when enough pressure is applied.
How to Spot Failing Calipers
There's a tremendous amount of heat generated when you brake. In time, this can weaken the seals inside the calipers, causing them to break down. Signs of trouble include:
- Your brakes regularly grind or squeal
- Your vehicle pulls to one side when you're braking
- Your brakes feel spongy
- You need to pump the brakes to get them to work right
- Your warning light comes on
